Heatmap

Revenue per click

Colour the page by what a click on each element brings in, not by how often it is clicked.

What you see

The page with every element coloured by revenue per click: the revenue from the sessions that clicked the element, divided by those sessions. Elements that are clicked by people who buy stand out, whether they are clicked often or not.

Why clicks are not enough

The most clicked element on a page is often the menu or the search field. That says little about what earns money. Revenue per click puts a small banner that is clicked by buyers ahead of a big one that is clicked by browsers.

Next to it are revenue, revenue per day and converted sessions, so you can see both what each click is worth and what the element brings in overall, and the average order size of the sessions that clicked it.

An example

On the front page, the hero banner gets the most clicks. Coloured by revenue per click, a smaller "Bestsellers" link further down is worth twice as much per click. That is an argument for moving it up, made with numbers.

What other heatmaps don't do

A heatmap that only knows about clicks cannot tell you what a click is worth. Historian ties each click to the session it was in and the revenue that session produced, so revenue is a colour on the heatmap like any other metric.

Stop guessing why revenue dropped.
