What happened on the 26th of April?

A simple question from a CMO, led us to uncover a major data-gap in the e-commerce MarTech stack.

How it all started…

I (Peter) was working as CTO of a company that relied heavily on webshop revenue when one day, the CMO asked what happened on the webshop on the 26th of April.

From our source code versioning system, I got the code that was in production on that date, only to discover that it was nowhere near enough to give a satisfactory answer.

The reason he wanted to know was that he had looked at Google Analytics, and determined that this was a turning point for our Conversion Rate, which had dropped one percentage point.

A significant chunk of our revenue was missing, and we couldn’t retrieve it, though many attempts were made to do so. This led to all sorts of not-so-nice consequences.

I started scouting the market for a solution, so we wouldn’t end up in the position again and was surprised to learn that it did not exist.

I started talking to Filip, knowing that he had previously worked at a very successful MarTech startup. He had some observations about which questions were answered well by the current offerings in the market, and more importantly some observations which customers had, but were not being answered.

We synthesized our experiences and realized the problem, the history was missing. While most, if not all, companies had access to the equivalent of a statistician, all of the companies were missing a historian.

That is what we founded Historian to provide.
